She crossed the finish line at about 3 a.m. — but not alone. Carla Stewart was among the participants in the Relay for Life of Sky Valley, held June 2 at Monroe High School to benefit the American Cancer Society.
“Everyone who was still awake ran the last lap with me,” Stewart said “It was an amazing moment.”
Stewart is administrative director for the Sky Valley Food Bank. In fall 2016 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After two surgeries, radiation and a year of chemotherapy, Stewart was back to running marathons.
To celebrate her birthday this month, she ran her age, with donors asked to give $55. She ended up as the event’s top fund-raiser, at $4,060.
In all, the event has raised over $74,000 toward its $85,000 goal. Donations are still welcome, at relay.acsevents.org.
