The Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Band took third place in the prestigious Essentially Ellington national high school jazz band competition sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
The competition took place last weekend.
Seattle’s Roosevelt High School took second place and the Dillard Center for the Arts, a Florida school, took the top prize.
The students competed on stage and had the opportunity to study with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Wynton Marsalis.
Mountlake Terrace students also took home some individual prizes including:
•Forest Jackson for tenor sax.
Jack Walters for outstanding triple (tenor, alto and clarinet)
Taylor Call and Skyler Floe for trumpet
Kendall Irby on trombone
And the entire trombone and rhythm sections for group performance
This year’s competition included 110 bands from around the country. Of those, 15 were selected to compete in New York City.
