EVERETT – A 23-year-old Everett man was chased down by witnesses and arrested on suspicion of hit and run after a five-car accident in downtown Everett Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The suspect and a 21-year-old Oregon man, whose pickup rolled over, were taken to the Providence Everett Medical Center Colby campus. Their conditions were not available Sunday night.
Witnesses indicated the Everett man’s northbound van went through a stoplight at Broadway and 23rd Street and collided with the pickup, causing both vehicles to roll over, Everett police officials said.
Details were sketchy and traffic investigators were still compiling accident reports Sunday night, said Everett Police Sgt. Cheryl Braley.
The pickup was on its side when police and paramedics arrived a little after 4 p.m. and firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut off the top of the cab to get the driver out.
“He appeared to be in very serious condition,” said Everett Police Sgt. Dan O’Neill.
Brenda Wall, 46, of Everett, was driving a friend’s van that sustained minimal damage in the accident. She was thankful she wasn’t injured as she surveyed the aftermath, including the mangled pickup by her car.
The collision was scary, she said.
“I saw my life flash before my eyes,” she said.
The 23-year-old Everett man ran from the accident, O’Neill said.
“He was captured two blocks north on Broadway and was detained by a citizen,” O’Neill said.
Police rerouted traffic along Broadway for more than an hour as dozens of passersby watched.
