Monroe: Experiment forces class evacuation

A ninth-grade science class was evacuated Wednesday after a teacher’s demonstration of a chemical reaction went awry.

The experiment combined sodium and water. A beaker broke, causing a loud noise and sending nontoxic fumes into the air, school district spokeswoman Rosemary O’Neil said.

Students were evacuated, and staff called their parents. Aid crews also were called to the school, 1408 W. Main St., after some students complained of scratchy throats and headaches.

Most of the 18 students returned to their other classes.

One was taken to Valley General Hospital in Monroe at the request of a parent, while another parent picked up her child to take to a family doctor.

The teacher followed all safety precautions, including standing behind safety shields, O’Neil said.

“It’s a very common experiment in science classes. The teacher was very experienced and had done this before but unfortunately had this unexpected result today,” she said.

Marysville: Bomb calls evacuate two businesses

Two bomb threats caused evacuations Wednesday, police said.

The Quil Ceda Village Wal-Mart was evacuated Wednesday morning after a man called in a bomb threat.

The man called the store at 8:11 a.m., saying there was a bomb in the building, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.

The building was evacuated. State Patrol police dogs searched the building. After nothing was found, people were allowed back into the store at 11:10 a.m., Jorgensen said.

The threat was the second against the Quil Ceda store in less than a month. It was the fifth threat to a Snohomish County Wal-Mart in recent months.

About 5 p.m. Wednesday, a woman called in a bomb threat to the Safeway at 1258 State Ave., Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.

“She said there was a bomb, 35 minutes to evacuate and hung up,” he said.

The store, a child care center and surrounding businesses were evacuated. State Patrol police dogs searched the building and found nothing, Lamoureux said.

Police are trying to find the woman who made the call, he said.

Man pleads guilty in Edmonds gunbattle

A Mexican national who was originally charged with murder in an Aug. 25 gunbattle in Edmonds pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault and faces up to three years in prison.

Prosecutors said they couldn’t prove that Pedro Esparaza-Barajas, 36, fired a pistol during a shootout that killed Nolberto “Paul” Lopez-Rodriquez, 36, and Adan Hernandez, 23.

Esparaza-Barajas, who had a pistol, pleaded guilty to the assault charge and to being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday by Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Anita Farris.

Deputy prosecutor John Adcock said police believe the shooter is Adriel Facundo Romero, 34. The courts have issued a $1 million arrest warrant for him, although officials believe he may now be in Mexico, Adcock said.
