COUPEVILLE — Jane Koetje was sworn in Monday as the new clerk for Island County, a temporary assignment she hopes will stretch into a longer stay.
Koetje will serve out the remainder of the term of Marilee Black, who is retiring and moving from the state after more than 27 years as Island County clerk.
The county board of commissioners selected Koetje for the post last week. Two other candidates, Sharon Franzen and Julie Hammonds, were also in the running.
"I am excited, I’m humbled and looking forward to the year and learning and making the Island County clerk’s office the best in the state," Koetje said.
The county clerk is the administrative and financial officer of the Superior Court. The clerk keeps a record of all court appearances and pleadings, as well as wills, bonds and other documents filed with the county. The job pays approximately $58,000 a year.
Koetje, 51, has been a Whidbey Island resident for 32 years. She has been the Island County public defense administrator for 22 years.
Koetje will serve the rest of Black’s term, which expires at the end of 2002, and run for election. She plans to kick off her election campaign in January.
