SEATTLE — A new nonprofit group called American Alps has formed to take over the push by North Cascades Conservation Council to add 237,000 acres to the North Cascades National Park.
The group — formerly an advisory committee to the Conservation Council — will now lead the campaign to increase the size of the park, and enhance family recreational opportunities in it.
It released a final proposal for expanding the park in September after working with groups and residents bordering the park. Any addition to the park would have to be approved by Congress.
On Monday, the new board met and chose Jim Davis, who was executive director of the North Cascades Conservation Council until Jan. 1, as its new president.
Other officers include Raelene Gold as vice president; Jim DiPeso as secretary; and Morry Browne as treasurer.
The North Cascades Conservation Council spearheaded creation of the 684,000-acre North Cascades National Park in 1968, but has since expanded it mission as watchdog of the park and surrounding public lands.
