New Highway 532 bridge to Camano Island is complete

STANWOOD — A wider Highway 532 between Stanwood and Camano Island opened to traffic Thursday.

Work by state Department of Transportation contractor crews to rebuild the Davis Slough Bridge started in August 2014. Wet weather delayed the original planned opening for fall 2015.

A four-foot wide median now separates eastbound and westbound traffic. Wider shoulders provide room for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as disabled vehicles.

The new bridge is more than twice as wide and nine feet taller than the old bridge and is designed to withstand a strong earthquake.

The bridge is the only roadway on and off Camano Island. With road work complete on the $19 million project, the speed limit will be restored to 45 mph once new speed limit signs are placed.
