LYNNWOOD — A gap in the Interurban Trail was bridged last week as officials opened a pedestrian overpass at 44th Avenue W.
Pedestrians and bicyclists used to be routed through a labyrinth of crosswalks and sidewalks.
The $3.9 million project was under development for more than a decade.
It was built in partnership with the state Department of Transportation serving as the construction management team.
Lynnwood also applied for a $1 million share of the state’s 2010 Enhancements Funding Program grants the Puget Sound Regional Council has made available to Snohomish, King, Pierce and Kitsap counties.
The money could help the city complete two other portions of the Interurban Trail by 2013.
So far, the city has received $615,000 in federal grants to help it complete the last two Interurban Trail gaps in Lynnwood’s south end neighborhoods, said Lynnwood project manager David Mach. Grants would pay for all trail improvements while the city pitches in about $400,000 for utility upgrades, Mach said.
