Incumbent Democratic 21st Legislative District State Rep. Strom Peterson had only one challenger on the Aug. 2 primary-election ballot; so voters had to choose among voting for Peterson, voting for Libertarian candidate Alex Hels, writing in a name or leaving the position blank. More than 11 percent of district voters left the position blank. That’s more than twice the number of blank ballots for the other 21st District position on the ballot.
Final certified election results showed that among the marked ballots, Peterson led Hels by a 3-1 margin. Both will advance to the Nov. 8 general election. No Republican filed for the position.
The other 21st District position will see a Democrat vs. Republican contest in November, after Democratic incumbent Lillian Ortiz-Self and Republican challenger Jeff Scherrer led primary votes ahead of a Libertarian and an independent.
