Stanwood

Holiday donation drive gathers food, cash, toys

Considering the snow and the resulting difficult driving conditions, city officials are pleased with the outcome of Stanwood’s annual holiday donation drive.

More than 100 pounds of food was donated to the Stanwood Food Bank, City Hall office manager Julie Johnson said.

In addition, 20 new gifts of toys and clothing were donated to the Christmas Room effort for children from low-income families in the Stanwood-Camano School District.

People also donated more than $420 to help families in need pay their city utility bills, Johnson said.

Arlington

Santa Run results in cash, food donations

Santa was on his game last week as he and Arlington firefighters gathered cash and food donations for the Arlington Community Food Bank.

Called the Santa Run, it’s a tradition that’s more than 20 years old, firefighter Ronda Davies said. A fire truck drives Santa through the neighborhoods of the city for about 12 nights in December.

The primary purpose of the Santa Run is the chance for Santa to visit with the children in town, Davies said.

With more people out of work and the food bank struggling to help with the growing needs of the community, the Santa Run food drive is equally important, she said.

Children run out to the street to visit and Santa, and they are followed by adults carrying bags of food, city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said. This year the Santa Run collected $1,176 and 6,655 pounds of food for the food bank.

“It really is a wonderful donation,” food bank board chairman Duane Weston said. “Community groups such as school PTAs and churches also have been very generous. We’re very blessed and thankful.”

The food bank handed out 350 Christmas baskets on Tuesday, Weston said.
