MUKILTEO — More cases of mumps are confirmed in Snohomish County.
The Mukilteo School District now is affected, with one probable case at Challenger Elementary.
The Snohomish Health District is tracking 47 cases. Nineteen are confirmed and 28 considered probable.
In recent years, the county saw no more than two cases annually. This year, a statewide outbreak has sickened hundreds.
Mumps have been reported at schools in the Everett, Monroe, Stanwood, Mukilteo and Lakewood districts. Several have enacted exclusion periods for students without proof of immunization. Exclusion periods at Hawthorne Elementary, Park Place Middle School and Twin City Elementary have ended.
Symptoms of mumps include fever, aches, swelling around the cheeks or jaw, and lack of energy or appetite. Most cases are mild, but the illness can cause lasting complications.
The health district has a mumps webpage at www.snohd.org/mumps.
