EVERETT — A Lake Stevens man shot to death by sheriff’s deputies Sunday night has been identified as Ilkka O. Hiironen.
Hiironen had been away from home for hours when he called his wife around 8 p.m. saying he was suicidal and wanted police to kill him, according to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, or SMART. About an hour later deputies found Hiironen’s truck under the U.S. 2 trestle east of Everett. They tried to talk with him. He had what looked like a weapon and he refused commands to drop it, according to the statement.
Three deputies opened fire, killing Hiironen, said Kristin Banfield, a spokeswoman for SMART. He was 35.
Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene.
The three deputies were put on leave pending an investigation, a standard in police shootings.
On Thursday the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Hiironen died from a gunshot wound.
