Whidbey Island resident Susan Kieffer, a physicist, geologist and author of “The Dynamics of Disaster,” speaks about disaster science in a free program, 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave.
Natural disasters like volcanoes and tsunamis don’t have to kill large numbers of people and destroy huge amounts of property, says Kieffer, a MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellow. She will focus on landslides, tsunamis and the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. As the ability to forecast such events grows, Kieffer would like to see a public policy response — and she has ideas of how that might happen.
