PORTLAND, Ore. — A red-tailed hawk that got stuck in the grill of a sport utility vehicle on I-5 is recovering after it was rescued by the driver and an Oregon State Police trooper.
The driver was on a stretch of the highway Wednesday through farmland south of Portland when the hawk flew in front of the vehicle.
The driver stopped and found the hawk had broken through the front grill and was stuck in front of the radiator.
Senior Trooper Mike Hanson and the driver were able to remove the hawk. Hanson took it to the Audubon Society of Portland’s Wildlife Care Center.
A veterinarian said a preliminary examination of the bird was encouraging.
