SALEM — The Oregon Senate has approved a bill requiring the state to develop performance standards for teachers.
The Senate’s 25-0 vote on Tuesday sends the measure to the House.
The bill would require the State Board of Education to develop standards that could be used to determine the effectiveness of teachers and administrators. It requires that the standards be based on research and that they take into account multiple measures of student academic growth.
School districts would be required to include the standards in performance evaluations of teachers and administrators.
Gov. John Kitzhaber says the bill is a big step toward creating a more accountable and innovative education system in Oregon.
