EUGENE, Ore. — A giant tortoise recovering at a veterinary hospital in Oregon is heading for a warmer home in Texas to enjoy his old age.
The Register-Guard reports the 600-pound tortoise named Ozzie is believed to be at least 150 years old, but he could be even older.
Carbon dating done on the shell of another giant tortoise at a zoo in India showed that animal to be about 255 years old at the time of his death in 2006.
Given that kind of life span, Ozzie may have plenty of time left. His owners want to remain anonymous, but they plan to ship him to Texas where the temperature is more appropriate for an animal native to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
