Darrington

Group reading book set in Iran

The Darrington Book Group is planning to discuss “Reading Lolita in Tehran,” by Azar Nafisil at next month’s meeting.

The book is a memoir about a teacher in Iran who gathers her most-committed female students to participate in a book discussion group reading forbidden Western classics.

The Darrington group will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 2 at the Darrington Library, 1005 Cascade St.

Everett

Blood drive to honor late staffer

The Snohomish County Department of Corrections will hold a blood drive Feb. 25 in memory of corrections Sgt. Rodney Svetich.

Svetich, who’d worked for Snohomish County for 26 years, died Dec. 20. He was 56.

His co-workers and friends wanted to honor him and do something to benefit the community, said corrections spokesman Jim Harms.

The blood drive is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. and 4:15-7 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Puget Sound Blood Center bloodmobile parked at the Snohomish County Jail, 1918 Wall Street.

Neighbors meet at church tonight

The Cascade View, Everett Mall South, Olivia Park Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Everett Free Methodist Church, 9506 Seventh Ave. SE.

The neighbors will hear from the Everett Fire Department, which is offering Community Emergency Response Team training starting in April. The neighbors will also elect a new chairman or chairwoman.

Neighbors group meets on Tuesday

The Northwest Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the third-floor piano lounge at Washington Oakes, 1717 Rockefeller Ave. Local historian David Dilgard will discuss how to research historic buildings. Island County

Fair board comes to Coupeville

The Island County Fair Board members will meet at 7 tonight at the Island County Commissioners Hearing Room (Room 102B), Island County Annex Building, 1 NE Sixth Street, Coupeville.

The meeting is an opportunity for residents in the north and central parts of Whidbey Island to comment or find out how they can pitch in for this summer’s fair. The fair board, which typically meets at the south end of the island, brings its meetings north to Coupeville twice a year.

Lake Stevens

Arts commission applicants sought

City officials are seeking applicants to serve on the Lake Stevens Arts Commission.

The commission has two vacancies, one that expires Dec. 31, 2006, and one that expires Dec. 31, 2008. The commission meets at 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Annex, 1812 Main St.

Marysville

Parks offers kids’ nutrition class

The Parks and Recreation Department is offering a nutrition class called Lunchbox Makeovers with certified nutritionist Karen Lamphere. The class will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Jennings Memorial Park barn, 6915 Armar Road.

The class will provide creative ideas for packing children’s lunchboxes with healthy, nutritious foods they’ll eat and will offer suggestions for good after-school snacks.

The cost is $18, plus a $3 supply fee payable to the instruction during the class. Call the parks office for registration information at 360-651-5085.

Mountlake Terrace

City addresses zoning, fee issues

A proposal to adjust zoning in the city to make it consistent with the city’s Comprehensive Plan will be considered by the City Council at its meeting Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 23204 58th Ave. W.

The council will also consider adopting an ordinance establishing fees for electronic utility and lien search services.

Snohomish

Group chooses 2004 raffle quilt

Busy Bee Quilters of Snohomish recently had its raffle drawing for the 2004 Raffle Quilt. Darlene Larson of Everett had the winning ticket.

The funds raised from the event will benefit the group’s educational programs to encourage the study and mastery of quilting.

The group welcomes anyone who is interested in quilting. It usually meets on the third Thursday of each month at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1512 Pine Ave. For more information, go to the group’s Web site at www.busybeequilters.com.

Tribes’ planning board to meet

The Tulalip Tribes Planning Commission will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at 6319 23rd Ave. NE. The meeting is open to the public.
