Arlington

Gregoire to join agriculture panel

Gov. Christine Gregoire will join state agriculture director Valoria Loveland and Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon for a breakfast discussion with farmers about agricultural issues from 8:30 to 10 a.m. today at Weller’s Family Restaurant, 2211 State Road.

Dale Reiner, president of the Snohomish County Farm Bureau, will moderate the discussion.

Bothell

Feds to donate land for firehouse

Firefighters in Bothell are expected to receive help from the federal government to obtain land for a new firehouse.

Language is included in the Defense Authorization Act to transfer land for the firehouse from the U.S. Army to Snohomish County Fire District 10. The district provides fire service for the Snohomish County portion of Bothell.

The bill was approved by the House Wednesday and was expected to be approved by the Senate and signed by the president, according to staff members for U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island.

The current firehouse has occupied its current site for 24 years and needs to be rebuilt.

Edmonds

Local veterans to be honored

Edmonds Memorial Cemetery will conduct its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the cemetery, 820 15th St. SW.

This year, two veterans who recently passed away will be honored. Marine Cpl. Steven Rintamaki of Lynnwood, 21, died in Iraq in September, and World War II Marine Geraldine Nutting, 81, passed away in December.

The ceremony will also mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Colors will be presented by local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and local Scout troops.

Music, along with the invocation and benediction, will be performed by high school and junior high school students.

Everett

Car wash set for swim club

The Everett Sharks Swim Club will hold its second annual benefit car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 4917 Evergreen Way, Everett.

Celebrate holiday of island nation

The Republic of the Marshall Islands Constitution Day celebration is this weekend, with an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Christian Assembly gym, 2415 Everett Ave., Everett.

Groups will come from around the Northwest for entertainment, food, games and dancing.

Council won’t meet next week

The City Council will not meet next week, since Monday is the fifth Monday of the month.

The council meets at 7 p.m. on the first four Mondays of the month at 1808 Main St. The next meeting will be June 6. The meeting is open to the public.

Lynnwood

Mayor receives council reprimand

The Lynnwood City Council has issued a written reprimand to Mayor Mike McKinnon for violating the city’s ethics code.

The city’s ethics board recently ruled that McKinnon violated the code by using office equipment to send a personal fax and by forwarding e-mails from a state initiative campaign to other city officials. The latter is a violation of state law prohibiting use of public facilities for campaign purposes.

McKinnon has said he did not intend to campaign for the initiative.

According to city law, the council decides what type of penalty to impose in ethics cases. The council’s reprimand, issued Monday, chastised the mayor’s “cavalier attitude” toward compliance with the law.

Marysville

Council won’t meet next week

The City Council will not meet next week due to the Memorial Day holiday and because it’s the fifth Monday of the month. The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 6 at City Hall, 1049 State Ave. The meeting is open to the public.

Mill Creek

McCollum pool opens Saturday

The pool is available for rentals, open swims and swimming lessons from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Monroe

Class will help smokers quit

Valley General Hospital offers the class “Every Breath You Take” from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays June 6 to June 20 at 14701 179th Ave. SE.

The three-week smoking cessation class incorporates hypnotherapy and addiction education. The fee is $36.

Mukilteo

Members sought for library board

Sno-Isle Libraries is seeking to fill five positions on the newly established Mukilteo Library Advisory Board.

The board will serve as an advisory group for the regional Sno-Isle Libraries Board of Trustees.

The five positions include two one-year terms, two two-year terms and one three-year term. After the first terms expire, a full term will be three years. Board members must live in the Mukilteo School District.

Snohomish

Senior center plans bake sale

Snohomish Senior Center will have a bake sale starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at McDaniels Do-It Center, 510 Second St. Homemade pies, cakes, breads, candies and cookies will be available, as well as raffle tickets for three quilts from the center’s quilting group.

Listen and play at flute circle

Downtown Snohomish will host the Cedartree Flute Circle from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Wired and Unplugged Internet Coffeehouse, 717 First St.

The free event provides an opportunity for the public to listen to native flute music or to play a flute, as well as learn where the instrument came from and about its spiritual uses.

Those who own flutes are encouraged to bring them and play along. Flute lessons are available by donation.

Stanwood

Commission has vacancy to fill

The city’s planning commission has a vacancy. The seven-member citizen advisory panel makes recommendations about land-use policy to the City Council.

Commissioners serve five-year terms. They are appointed by the mayor and approved by the council. Meetings are at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Mondays of each month at City Hall, 10220 270th St. NW. Commissioners must live within the city’s urban growth boundary.

Letters of interest may be sent to Stephanie Cleveland, planning director, at City Hall. The deadline is 5 p.m. June 30.

Flute circle plays at coffeehouse

The Celestial Coffee House will host the Cedartree Flute Circle from 7 to 9 tonight at the coffeehouse, 36904 U.S. 2.
