Hearing includes building heights
The Edmonds Planning Board will have a public hearing Wednesday on proposed changes to the city’s Comprehensive Plan.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 250 Fifth Ave. N.
Proposed changes include rules regarding downtown building heights, policies addressing essential public facilities and housing, an updated Comprehensive Plan map, and updates to factual information about the city referenced in the plan.

Riverside group to present awards
The Riverside Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight at the North Middle School library, 2514 Rainier Ave.
The association will have guest speakers and updates, and will present awards for December’s home of the month, holiday decorating contest winners and Riverside neighbor of the year.

The Bayside Neighborhood Association is having its holiday party from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the historic Van Valey House, 2130 Colby Ave.

Mentors Matter gets donation
The Fred Meyer Foundation has donated $960 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County, a branch of the YMCA of Snohomish County, for its Mentors Matter program.
The grant will help provide summer activities such as transportation and admission tickets for volunteers and children in the program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer organization that matches children between the ages of 6 and 14 in a one-to-one relationship with a qualified mentor for to help the children develop life skills.
Lake Stevens
Transit Center dedication today
Authorities will celebrate the grand opening of the Lake Stevens Transit Center with a dedication today, including the unveiling of a wall of tiles created by local high school students.
The tile wall will display students’ visions of transportation in 50 years.
The new center is the first of its kind in eastern Snohomish County. It will provide a place where people can transfer between local and commuter buses, as well as a destination that is an easy walk to shopping, dining and entertainment.
The ceremony also will include members of the U.S. Marine Corps collecting new, unwrapped toys for their “Toys For Tots” campaign.
The ceremony will be at 10:30 this morning at the center, 9414 Fourth St. SE.

Citizens Academy starts in February
The Lynnwood Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizen Academy.
The 16-week course, which meets 7-10 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 10-May 26, provides an in-depth look at how the police department works.
Topics include officer safety and defensive tactics; detectives, fingerprints, DNA and homicide investigation; a tour of the jail and 911 center; and a ride-along with an officer.

Town Center hearing Thursday
A public hearing on design plans for the third phase of Mill Creek Town Center will take place at a meeting of the Mill Creek Planning Commission Thursday.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 15728 Main St.
Phase three of the project is located on the west side of Main Street and south side of 153rd Street SE. Wakefield Pacific, Inc., of Bellevue plans to develop retail, restaurants, offices and residences with surface-level parking and a parking garage.

Downtown stores collect donations
Downtown businesses will continue to collect cash for the Snohomish Food Bank and Snohomish Senior Center through Dec. 19.
Donation jars have been placed at nearly 70 downtown businesses. Funds will be divided between the two organizations Dec. 20.

The Snohomish County DUI/Traffic Safety Task Force is accepting nominations for its annual awards ceremony.

Nominations are due Jan. 17, 2005.
Award-worthy achievements may have taken place in fields such as education, treatment, media, transportation, medicine, corrections, politics, art and community organizations. Programs that raised awareness about traffic safety also are considered.
