Traffic is expected to be reduced to one-lane today on portions of N. French Street. A sewer installation is expected to impact traffic between Fifth Street and Division Street. The work is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dawson appointed to Sound Transit board
The Snohomish County Council on Wednesday appointed Edmonds Councilwoman Deanna Dawson to sit on Sound Transit’s board of directors. Dawson was nominated by County Executive Aaron Reardon.
She works at the county for Reardon as one of two executive directors. She oversees law and justice and human services issues for the county executive.
Everett
Broadway rezone hearing set for tonight
The Everett Planning Commission is scheduled tonight to hold a public hearing on a sweeping plan to rezone about three miles of Broadway from 41st Street all the way to the far north end of the city.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at Everett Station’s Weyerhaeuser Room, 3201 Smith Ave.
City planners hope that by rezoning the area, they can encourage the development of a more pedestrian-friendly district.
Proposals commissioners expect to vote on include new design standards, landscaping and lighting requirements, and the prohibition of new car sales lots, adult entertainment shops and other types of businesses. The planning commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for a final vote later this year.
Marysville
Poker tournament to fight muscular dystrophy
Marysville Professional Firefighters Local 3219 and Sound Harley-ÂDavidson invite the public to a poker tournament to fight muscular dystrophy. The event takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday at Hawthorn Suites, 16710 Smokey Point Blvd.
A donation of $85 earns a place at the table to play “Hold’em for a Hog,” a Texas hold’em poker tournament to benefit the North Sound Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Sound Harley is putting up a new Harley-Davidson as a grand prize. Registration begins at 4 p.m.

Council discusses downtown plan
The City Council is set to discuss the city’s downtown master plan at 7 tonight at 806 W. Main St. The city just held a workshop with citizens on the plan.
The plan aims to revitalize the city’s downtown along Main Street, which used to be a commercial hub in the Skykomish Valley. City officials have held other meetings and workshops on the plan with business people and area residents.

City needs help when it deals with disasters
The city wants to organize a group of volunteers who will help city staff prepare for and deal with disasters. Volunteers are expected to answer phones, use amateur radio communications, do clerical work and keep data organized. Volunteers should be 16 years or older.

Mountlake Terrace
Check child safety seats
Parents can get their children’s safety seats checked free of charge at an event planned by the city of Mountlake Terrace.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department parking garage, 5906 232nd St. SW.
The city’s police and fire departments are teaming up to offer the car-seat checks, which are planned to continue during the first Wednesday of each month.
Appointments last about 30 minutes. People are asked to bring the manuals for their vehicles and safety seats.

City and school district discuss common issues
The City Council is set to have a workshop with the Snohomish School District at 6 tonight in the George Gilbertson Boardroom, 1601 Ave. D. The meeting is to discuss a range of issues that could affect both the city and the school district, including a possible expansion of the city’s urban growth area.

City’s commission needs new member
The city seeks applicants to fill a vacancy on its Civil Service Commission. The vacancy was created when Ray Odgen resigned. A new member is expected to serve on the commission until June 6, 2012.
The commission aids in the hiring and other personnel practices for employees within the city’s police department, and hears appeals or complaints regarding police personnel practices.
Applications for the position are available at City Hall and may also be downloaded from the city’s Web site at www.ci.snohomish.wa.us.
Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday at City Hall, 116 Union Ave.
