Firefighters team up with Santa
The Arlington Fire Department plans to escort Santa Claus through the city nightly beginning Sunday. Firefighters and Santa are scheduled to visit different neighborhoods each night from 7 to 9 p.m. Santa will hand out candy canes and pose for photos, while firefighters collect food for the Arlington Food Bank.

New paintings at library’s teen area
The teen area at the Edmonds Library is home to three colorful new paintings by two Edmonds-Woodway High School juniors.
Alicia Hendrix and Christina Olson created the artwork under the direction of art teacher Al Zugel.
The library’s teen area was recently spruced up with new periodical shelving, brighter paint, two cafe tables and laptop computers. The artwork rounds out the improvements.

City noted for new condo law
The Housing Consortium of Everett and Snohomish County, which advocates for affordable housing, awarded the city of Edmonds with a Housing Halo award Thursday during a breakfast forum with lawmakers.
The city was honored for an ordinance the council passed in November that requires landowners to pay low-income tenants $500 for relocation when converting their apartments to condos.

Motorcycle club holds breakfast
Chapter “C” of the Goldwingers Road Riders Association plans a breakfast social at 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Petosa’s Restaurant on Pacific Avenue and Broadway in Everett. Safety, dates and hours for offering rest-area coffee, and the upcoming “Early Spring Fun Run” will be discussed.

Workshop on teen eating disorders
Parents of middle and high school students in the Everett School District are invited to learn more about eating disorders and the practice of cutting skin.
The parent workshop, sponsored by the PTA groups at Cascade and Jackson high schools, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Cascade High School library, 801 E. Casino Rd.
It’s the third in a series of free workshops focusing on parents and teens. A light dinner will be served.
Port Gardner plans potluck
Port Gardner Neighborhood Association’s monthly meeting is set to begin with the group’s annual potluck at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Sequoia High School’s cafeteria, 3516 Rucker Ave.
The meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. will include the police report, announcements and a preview of the association’s new Web site.
The meeting is to end with a viewing of “Clark Park: Such a Special Place,” an oral history and video of Clark Park, the city’s first park.

Society Christmas party planned
The Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island plans a Christmas party for 1 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 S.R. 525 in Freeland.
Society members and their guests are invited to share Christmas goodies and their genealogical successes or family show-and-tell items.
No field trips or educational classes are planned for December.
Lake Stevens
Position open on planning board
City officials are trying to fill a vacancy on the planning commission.
The group is the primary advisory board to the City Council on land use, comprehensive planning and zoning within the city limits and urban growth area.
The commission meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. Appointments are for a four-year term.
People in the city’s newly annexed area or urban growth area are encouraged to apply, city clerk Norma Scott said.

Marysville
City collects for food bank
City employees collected what it estimates is more than a ton of food and cash equivalents in the city’s annual holiday food drive. One dollar raised was equivalent to a pound of food, according to city calculations. With food and money combined, the collection was about 2,745 pounds, city spokesman Doug Buell said.
The collection goes to the Marysville Community Food Bank.
The police department raised almost half the total, Buell said.
Mayor Dennis Kendall praised city employees for the food drive.
“At this time of year, your efforts to give back to the community you serve are greatly appreciated,” he said.
Mill Creek
Church plans ‘Snow Day’
Saturday is shaping up as a snow day at Gold Creek Community Church.
The church plans to haul large amounts of snow from the mountains for sledding, inner tubing and an exhibition by professional snowboarders.
Snow Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 4326 148th St. SE.

Monroe
Meeting set to discuss U.S. 2
The U.S. 2 Safety Coalition has scheduled a meeting for 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Monroe Public Library, 1070 Village Way. Among the items to be discussed are how to prioritize improvement projects recommended in the state’s safety study on U.S. 2. The $1.3 million study is due in spring 2007.
The proposed improvement projects include expanding the highway from two to four lanes between Snohomish and west of Monroe and between east of Monroe to Gold Bar.
Mountlake Terrace
City OKs budget, raises utility rates
The city of Mountlake Terrace has approved a $58.6 million budget for 2007 and a $45.1 million budget for 2008.
The City Council approved the budget Monday. The budget includes money for increased road and park maintenance and code enforcement.
The council also voted to increase monthly water rates by an average of $1.65 per month by 2008 and sewer rates by $1.68. Monthly storm water rates will increase 68 cents by 2008.
Mukilteo
Lighthouse gift shop to open
The Mukilteo Lighthouse Gift Shop is planning open hours the next two weekends for the holidays.
The shop is scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and again on Dec. 16.
Open hours are planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and again on Dec. 17. The Lighthouse Gift Shop is located at 604 Front St.
The shop, managed by the Mukilteo Historical Society, will then close until April 1. For more information call 425- 513-9602.
Snohomish
Dance group holds event
Sunday Swing Group, a dance group based in Snohomish, has scheduled a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Oxford Saloon on First St.
The event is to recognize the era of the 1920s through the 1940s with live music and swing dancing. The event is open to the public.
Stanwood
Council and commission meet
The Stanwood City Council and the Planning Commission plan to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Stanwood Fire Station to discuss amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan.
