EDMONDS — For decades, the beach at Edmonds’ Marina Beach Park has been split by the former Unocal Pier.
No longer.
Crews have finished removing all above-ground and above-water elements of the pier.
The new view from the park is striking, as the pier’s absence is immediately noticeable.
“On a sunny day, it is going to be great,” said Lexine Pishue of Edmonds. “With the mountains, and the water, it is going to be awesome.”
The $2 million pier removal project was supposed to be completed by March but is ahead of schedule, said Rich Lindsay, Edmonds’ parks maintenance manager.
Crews are still cutting out parts of the structure below the water line, but that work could be finished in a few weeks, Lindsay said.
Abandoned in 1991, the onetime oil pier has served for the last few years only as a dividing line between the city park and its off-leash dog park.
A new divider will be installed soon.
A 5-foot-tall chain-link fence will run from the dog park entrance to the end of the rock jetty, Lindsay said.
Washington State Ferries are paying to remove the creosote-treated pier as part of early environmental mitigation for future improvements to Edmonds’ ferry terminal, according to WSF spokesperson Joy Goldenberg.
