I just got back from an interview with Monica Novini, a dedicated master gardener with big plans. She’s organizing a series of free veggie gardening classes at the Morris Garden in Monroe. That’s right, free classes, and you don’t have to live in Monroe.
The Morris Garden is a community garden that grows vegetables, herbs and fruit for the food bank next door. Novini got inspired to do even more with the garden after she encountered a couple of city officials last spring discussing whether they should bark over the garden or pave it.
She wants more people to learn how to grow nutritious vegetables at home. The classes will include a brief lecture and demonstration, and then everyone will get their hands dirty practicing what they just learned in the garden. Topics will vary depending on the season. She plans to practice year-round vegetable gardening so there should be plenty to do most of the year.
You don’t have to sign up, pay money or commit. Just show up and learn. And, hopefully, start something next spring in your own yard.
I’m writing a story on the subject for the 25th. The first class is set for 9/27. More information to come.
