Two had peace signs painted on them. One had red paint splashed on it. Another was removed altogether.
For the past month, Cecil Chapman has had large campaign signs for President Bush at the corner of Mukilteo Speedway and Harbour Pointe Boulevard.
Chapman, a Bush campaign volunteer, said other signs he’s put up also have been stolen.
“This is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” said Chapman, 67, a Mukilteo resident who has been volunteering for Republican campaigns for 10 years.
Chapman said he knows of one other large Bush campaign sign off I-405 east of Lynnwood that was partly torched, with the culprit leaving behind a gas can and a burned patch of grass.
The Kerry campaign has had signs disappear as well, local spokeswoman Kirstin Brost said. “It happens all the time,” she said. “It’s rude, and it’s unfortunate.”
Placement of campaign signs on a public right-of-way is legal in unincorporated Snohomish County, subject to some restrictions. Laws vary among cities in the county.
Stealing or vandalizing campaign signs in the county is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.
