PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police say an officer investigating an assault on a bike and pedestrian path shot and killed a man who came at another officer with a crowbar.
KGW-TV reports that officers were called Thursday morning to the Springwater Corridor Trail in southeast Portland on an assault case.
The police spokesman, Sgt. Pete Simpson, says two officers tried to talk to a suspect.
But, Simpson said, the suspect swung a crowbar at one officer who fell while backing away.
Simpson said that when the suspect continued to swing, the second officer fired.
The dead man’s identity hasn’t been made public.
Police says they don’t know whether he was among the transient population along the trail. It follows an old train line from the Willamette River through Gresham to Boring.
