VANCOUVER, Wash. — Hundreds of people and boats plan to gather on the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon on Saturday to protest plans to build fossil fuel terminals nearby.
The event follows a decision this past week by the Port of Vancouver to approve an oil terminal accepting about 380,000 barrels a day. The groups organizing the protest, Portland Rising Tide and 350.org, said they will do whatever they can to prevent the terminal from being built.
As part of the protest, people from across the Pacific Northwest will gather on the river in kayaks and canoes. They plan to form a symbolic river blockade to demonstrate regional opposition to proposals to move oil, coal and natural gas along the Columbia River.
