SEATTLE — The University of Washington’s plan to add a housing facility for its Bothell campus has drawn criticism from nearby residents.

The Seattle Times reported that the university is looking to add a 500-resident dormitory and a dining hall for the hillside campus. The dorm would be located about 60 feet from a neighborhood. Residents say they worry about noise and how students will behave.

UW’s board of regents recently approved $3.2 million to begin design and permitting work for the project, which is meant to meet the campus’ growing demand for student housing.

In response to residents’ concerns, Vice Chancellor Ana Karaman says the university is looking to have a 30-foot evergreen buffer between the dorms and nearby homes.

A public hearing on the project will be held March 1.
