EVERETT — Police here are on the hunt for a man who tried to rob a minimart Jan. 21.
The man went into a store in the 3000 block of Everett Avenue around 6:22 p.m. His face was obscured by what appeared to be a dark stocking.
He pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded cash, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
While gathering the money, the woman was able to alert her husband and son, who were upstairs.
Police released surveillance video from the store that shows her family running to help her. One of them waved a baseball bat and chased the would-be robber out of the store.
Once outside, the robber hopped on a bicycle and pedaled away. Police searched the area with a police dog but were unable to find him, Goetz said.
The robber was described as white, about 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. His blue denim jacket had a wool collar. He was wearing blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
“We are hoping however that someone might recognize his mannerism or clothing,” Goetz said.
Police Friday didn’t say whether or not the robbery was related to a string of robberies in north Everett over the past few months.
A suspected serial robber has been hitting minimarts and espresso stands since May. At least 15 robberies were reported between May 2 and Oct. 25. All but two of the robberies have been in Everett and primarily at businesses north of 41st Street.
The suspect in the series of robberies usually wears a bandanna and sunglasses as part of his getup.
Police do not recommend that people chase after armed robbers. They remind businesses that, in case of a robbery, it is always best for employees just to hand over the cash.
The money can be replaced, but lives can’t, Goetz said.
