A would-be rock star who allegedly financed expensive tastes with stolen credit cards and fake identities is behind bars after Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies arrested him Friday night in Shoreline.
The Lynnwood Police Department put Scott Christopher Moughton, 43, on its “most wanted” list after officers said he was their suspect in a series of crimes committed there.
He was wanted on warrants from several jurisdictions and has a number of pending felony charges in Snohomish County Superior Court. Charges include identity theft, forgery, possession of stolen property and having drugs in his possession, according to court documents.
On Tuesday, a judge set $45,000 bail for Moughton.
In August, Lynnwood police asked for the public’s help to find Moughton.
Police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said officers want to talk to Moughton about a stolen identification used to buy a $71,000 Lexus in May from a Lynnwood dealership, Sessions said.
Lynnwood police also want to speak with Moughton about stolen credit cards recently used to make purchases at Nordstrom at Alderwood mall, Sessions said.
Moughton has been on the radar screen of local law agencies for years.
He was indicted on federal charges three years ago in connection with a major identity theft ring.
At that time, police found bags of stolen mail, passports, driver’s licenses and equipment to make identification cards in Moughton’s Bothell apartment.
The charges against Moughton were dropped after evidence was thrown out because of a problem with the search warrant, said Emily Langlie, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Moughton, also known as “Rock Star Scott,” has claimed to be a former member of the Bellevue-based rock band Queensryche.
Band officials say Moughton played guitar on Queensryche lead singer Geoff Tate’s solo album in 2002 but has never been part of the band.
