EVERETT — A community safety fair is planned for Casino Road on April 23.
It’s the first event of its kind for the city and the neighborhood, Everett Fire Marshal Eric Hicks said. The idea for the fair started after the fatal New Year’s Eve fire at the Bluffs apartments.
The blaze made clear that tenants at the complex needed more fire-safety education, Hicks said. Many who were directly affected by the fire are still healing from what they experienced that night.
“There were a lot of things learned there,” Hicks said. “We do events all throughout the year, but we really wanted to have an event to target that area to help residents out.”
The fair is set to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Horizon Elementary School, 222 W. Casino Road. Activities will include a cooking fire simulation, fire extinguisher demonstrations, and bicycle helmet fittings. There will be police and fire rigs to check out, and food available for purchase, including from a food truck, and free popcorn.
Families can sign up for home fire-safety inspections and free smoke alarms, Hicks said. The city plans to provide translators in Spanish and Russian.
Fair organizers include the Everett Police Department, the city’s emergency management division, the office of neighborhoods and more than a dozen community groups.
Attendees will “see what we do on a daily basis to keep the community safe,” Hicks said.
