The Marysville School Board is expected to fill the first of three vacant positions Tuesday night.
Three board members, Vicki Gates, Don Hatch and Michael Kundu, will decide on a replacement for Carol Jason as District 2 representative. Jason resigned last month.
Two candidates, Cindy Erickson, 44, and Don Wlazlak, 68, will be interviewed during the board meeting, Superintendent Larry Nyland said.
District 2 covers the north end of Marysville, where Erickson recently moved.
Erickson has been a board member since last fall, representing District 5. She will resign Tuesday from her current position.
“I want to serve the people in the area I live,” she said. “I think it’s important to have the first-hand information when parents have questions.”
Wlazlak worked for the Snohomish County Council for six years and the Superior Court for nine years before he retired in 1999.
He said the Marysville School District has grown so fast that it is difficult for schools to keep pace. Education demands also are changing, he said.
“We need to have better vocational programs to help those who don’t go to colleges,” he said.
“If I don’t get this position, I will still be a supporter of the school district,” he added.
Two other positions still will need to be filled.
Gates, District 3 representative, said she plans to resign Tuesday. She is moving to Everett.
Marysville residents Kelley Albert and Darci Becker have shown an interest in the District 3 position. Two others, Sherri Crenshaw and Ralph Druckman, have applied for Erickson’s District 5 position.
The application deadline for the District 3 and 5 spots is Wednesday. The board is hoping to choose its new members by its first meeting in August.
