School FYI

New Everett High School Principal Catherine Matthews has added a familiar face to her staff from her days leading Lakewood High School.

Jack Roy, Lakewood High School assistant principal, has accepted a position as assistant principal at EHS.

Given the timing of Roy’s departure, a search for permanent replacement could not effectively be completed by the time school starts, said Lakewood Superintendent Larry Francois.

Fred Dahlem, who retired as principal at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek a year ago, has agreed to serve as interim assistant principal for the year. Dahlem came out of retirement to teach math and science at Lakewood most of first semester last year.

Edmonds School Board seeks new member

The Edmonds School District is seeking applications for a vacant school board position.

The seat opened up last week when board member Doug Fair resigned.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and reside in District 1, which covers the southwest portion of the district.

Residents who meet the requirements can send a letter of interest by 5 p.m. Sept. 9 to the attention of JoAnn Kerns in the Edmonds School District, 20420 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood, WA, 98036. Call 425-670-7003.

Sixty participate in reading program

Besides a large summer school program, the Marysville School District has also offered reading comprehension tests at the YMCA and opened an elementary school library.

As of July, 60 students were taking Accelerated Reader exams in a partnership between the district and Marysville YMCA, which allowed twice-a-week access to its computers.

Accelerated Reader exams are popular multiple-choice computer tests that give students points based on difficulty and the number of questions they answer correctly.

Pinewood Elementary School also opened its library once a week over the summer. In July, 255 books were checked out and 105 students and family members visited the library.

Back-to-school fair is today in Edmonds

The Edmonds School District’s annual back-to-school community resource fair is set for 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today at Cedar Valley Community School.

Free haircuts from local salons will be given on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 50 students.

The Snohomish Health District will provide an on-site immunization clinic. Parents need to bring their child’s shot record.

Other programs of interest include Head Start enrollment, student lunches, student registration, free clothing, vision and hearing screening and access to local social service.

Cedar Valley Community School, 19220 56th Ave. W., Lynnwood, is behind the Bank of America on 196th St. SW.

Fryelands school to be dedicated Aug. 22

The community is invited to a dedication of the new Fryelands Elementary School in Monroe, at 7 p.m. Aug. 22. The school is located at 15286 Fryelands Blvd.

The $11.5 million elementary school’s 50,500 square feet of classrooms and other space will be full with 500 students when it opens this fall.

The school was part of a $21.8 million bond issue approved by voters in May 2003, which also funded additions to Monroe High, Hidden River Middle and Maltby Elementary schools.

Renovations continue at Maltby, while a new stadium at Monroe High School is to be ready by Homecoming in October.
