Schools applause

Stanwood High School nominated the following students to the Washington Scholars Program: Amanda Baumgartner, daughter of Gary and Sharon Baumgartner; Melissa Bretland, daughter of Brian and Patricia Bretland; Ian Mai, son of Brian and Janine Mai; and Daniel Redfern, son of Stephen and Kathryn Redfern. Finalists and alternates in the state scholarship competition will be announced in March.

ROTC team performs: The Snohomish High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, which also includes Monroe High School students, recently hosted the Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference Competition and had several top finishers:

First place: Armed Drill Team under the command of Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Geoffrey Smelser; Cadet Staff Sgt. Spencer Rader in the Single Drill event; cadets Rader and Smelser in the Duel event; and Cadet Lance Cpl. Kelsie Smith in Individual Armed Drill.

Second place: Color Guard No. 1 and Unarmed Team, both under the command of Cadet Capt. Ashleen Williams; and Williams in the Unarmed Individual Commander category.

Fourth place: Color Guard No. 2 under the command of Cadet Sgt. Mikayla Daggett; and Smelser in the Individual Armed Commander category.

Fifth place: Pvt. Christian Rowland in Individual Armed Drill.

Sixth place: Cadet Lance Cpl. Taylor Hackel in the expert category for the Air Rifle competition; and Lance Cpl. Taylor Hackel in Individual Armed Drill.

Arlington DECA advances: Fourteen members of Arlington High School’s DECA club are advancing to a state competition after finishing well in a recent regional match:

Snohomish High School Debate fares well: The Snohomish Competitive Speech and Debate Team picked up another 65 trophies in the last two tournaments they attended at the University of Puget Sound and at the Mount Vernon Invitational, bringing their total for the year to 221. Last year at this point the team had earned 39. Snohomish now leads all teams in the Puget Sound District.

Teagle’s essay wins: Skye Teagle, a sixth-grade student at Cathcart Elementary School in Snohomish, won first place in the district for an essay that she entered in a Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest. Her essay also won third place in the state.

Dean’s list: The following students were named to dean’s lists:

* Nicholas A. Brigman, Everett, Idaho State University College of Engineering, Pocatello, Idaho.

* Meredith Collins, Mukilteo, Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa.

Scholarship winner: Kelsey Erin Venable, Brier, recently received the $1,000 President’s Scholarship at Western Washington University.

Everett scholar-athletes: Six students from Everett’s three comprehensive high schools have been named this season’s scholar-athletes. The award, started in 2005, recognizes student-athletes who may not be stars in competition but who exhibit greatness in their classrooms and communities. Recipients of the winter 2006-07 award are:

Cascade High School

* Kori MacDonald, cheerleading. Kori has a 3.99 GPA and is ranked seventh in her class. Along with her cheerleading activities, Kori is an active member of the CHS leadership and service programs.

* Brian Li, swimming. Brian has a 3.98 GPA and ranks 10th in his class. He is a member of the Cascade High marching band, National Honor Society and has earned several team awards in music and swimming.

Everett High School

* Maureen Frauenholtz, girls basketball. Maureen carries a 3.4 GPA and serves as a team captain in three sports (volleyball, basketball, track and field). She also spends time coaching youth volleyball at the Everett Boys and Girls Club.

* John Raby, wrestling. John has a 3.2 GPA and competes in football and wrestling. Along with his school responsibilities, John has found the time to earn his Eagle Scout badge.

Henry M. Jackson High School

* Matt Heneghan, basketball. Matt has a 3.75 GPA. He has played basketball all four years and is a two-year letterman. In addition, he played football this year. Matt also volunteers at the South County Senior Center.

* Danielle Peterson, dance. Danielle is a senior with a 4.0 GPA. She is the captain of the dance team, of which she has been a member all four years. Danielle is a member of Leaders of the Pack, National Honor Society, band and percussion ensemble.

Sportsmanship awards: Brett Lund and David Safstrom were honored last week by the Snohomish County Basketball Officials Association with a 2006-07 Sportsmanship Award. The players were honored simultaneously as part of SCBOA’s ongoing effort to recognize students and adults who demonstrate fairness, ethics, fellowship and respect on the court.
