Scholastic Art Award winners: The Arts Council of Snohomish County recently presented its Scholastic Art Awards of 2007. A ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. Art will also be on display 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 6-8 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9. Audubon awards teachers: The Pilchuck Audubon Society has awarded eight teachers from five elementary schools in Snohomish County its Classroom Conservation Award. The award comes with $250 to pay for materials or activities related to their classroom projects. The winners and their projects:

Matthew Chaplick, Cedarhome Elementary School, Stanwood: Fifth-graders will plant shrubs and trees along streams in order to preserve salmon habitat, sample and classify microinvertebrates in the stream to determine the health of the stream, and plant eggs they have harvested and fertilized into local creeks.

Anne Hayward, Frank Wagner Elementary School, Monroe: Money will pay for nonfiction books about owls. Second-graders also will study owl pellets to see what owls eat and where they find their food.

Wanda Hill, Penny Creek Elementary School, Everett: Fourth-graders will create a kid-friendly movie to educate the student body about what is OK to recycle and what is not.

Kristina Kee, Penny Creek Elementary School, Everett: Fifth-graders will head out of the classroom to learn about intertidal life, tide pools, beach erosion, marine organisms and beach etiquette.

Amy Kelley, Cedarhome Elementary School, Stanwood: Fifth-graders will work at a fish hatchery, later planting the salmon eggs, working to see the salmon hatch and then keeping them alive.

Janice Northrup, Penny Creek Elementary School, Everett: Fourth- and fifth-graders will research and study the native plants found by the Lewis and Clark expedition. The students will create a courtyard display of these native plants including their significance to the community today.

Megan Ovenell, Stanwood Elementary School: Fifth-graders will study plant growth, including the important role of vegetation in maintaining adequate riparian zones.

David Richardson, Seattle Hill Elementary School, Everett: Money will pay for 50 pounds of sterilized gravel, water conditioning chemicals and test kits for monitoring salmon reared by his sixth-graders in the library.
