Schools Applause

Everett Scholar-Athletes: The Everett School District honors scholar-athletes from Cascade, Everett and Jackson high schools. Students must have a minimum 3.2 grade-point average and play a varsity sport. They are nominated by coaches. Fall 2006 scholar-athletes are:

CASCADE HIGH SCHOOL

Liz Gross, girls soccer. Liz has a 4.0 GPA and is ranked first in her class. She takes college-level Advanced Placement courses. Over the last three years, she has received league recognition for her skills on the soccer field.

Tyson Rickman, cross country. Tyson has earned several cross country team awards while earning a 3.85 GPA and scoring 1,530 on the SAT. In addition to running cross country, Tyson is a member of the National Honor Society and Senior Class Cabinet.

EVERETT HIGH SCHOOL

Makenna Brinster, girls soccer. Makenna has a 3.9 GPA and was named a soccer honorable mention in 2005. Her community involvement includes fundraising for Arlington sixth-grader Karl Bielser, who is waiting for a heart transplant. Makenna also is vice president of National Honor Society and a member of the environmental club and Young Life.

Cameron McKinnon, football. Cameron has a 3.52 GPA and serves as a volunteer at the food bank. He also is a Seagull Sidekick and has worked as a counselor at Seagull basketball and football camps.

JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL

Laice Valera, cross country. Laice has a 3.63 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Leaders of the Pack. She also does volunteer work with children at her church. She will earn her fourth letter in cross country this fall.

Hunter Spencer, football. Hunter has played football for four years, earning letters his junior and senior years as an offensive lineman. Hunter also participated in swimming and wrestling as an underclassman. Hunter has a 3.97 GPA and is a member of Key Club. He spends his weekends volunteering as a coach of 9- to 11-year-olds in the Silver Lake Football Association.

Scholarships: Students who recently received scholarships include:

Mary Aileen Corcoran, Snohomish, Western Washington University, $750 Don C. and Ada G. Walter Scholarship.

Gina Kim, Everett, Western Washington University, $1,000 Simpson Memorial Scholarship.

Willow Rudiger, Arlington, Western Washington University, $694 Gary Gray Memorial Scholarship in Environmental Photography and $1,000 Gerson F. Miller Journalism Scholarship.

Chelsea Vellema, Snohomish, Western Washington University, $575 Irene and Lloyd Williams Education Scholarship

September stars: Students of the Month for September at Lake Stevens School District secondary schools:

Lake Stevens High School: Mahalie Pryor and Austin Pribble, ninth grade; Amanda Bennett and Greg Duncan, 10th grade; Cassandra Rigleman and Kevin Shipley, 11th grade; Kaela Sands and Josiah Cheslik, 12th grade.

Lake Stevens Middle School: Brandon Preslar and Robyn Lucas, sixth grade; Manuel Jimenez and Mikaela Arns, seventh grade; Dallas Johnston and Zoe Bear, eighth grade.

North Lake Middle School: Brooke Busch and Travis Dohr, sixth grade; Hannah Jewett and Brady Pahukoa, seventh grade; Kelvin Campbell and Brooke Larsen, eighth grade.

Apple winners: October recipients of the Lake Stevens School District’s staff Apple Awards are: Sharon Sizer, fourth-grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School; Steve Pitkin, drug and alcohol intervention specialist at Lake Stevens High School; Mark Hein, math teacher and varsity boys basketball coach at Lake Stevens High School; Laura Wellman, Spanish interpreter for the Lake Stevens School District; Debbie Gendron, fourth-grade teacher at Skyline Elementary School.
