State Scholar: Snohomish High School senior Bryanna Plog has been named a Washington Scholar by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. She will be honored at a legislative luncheon in Olympia May 10.

CDC picks science teacher: Snohomish High School science teacher Tami Caraballo has been selected to be a science ambassador for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Caraballo was selected from numerous applicants from across the country.

Aspiring writer: Snohomish High School junior Caitlin Parker-Arnett has been accepted to the competitive writing program, the Kenyon Review Young Writers’ Workshop, which also is fully covering the $2,100 fee for the two-week program.

Teacher elected: Totem Falls Elementary School teacher Su Hickenbottom was elected the elementary school representative on the Board of the National Council for Social Studies.

Nice save: Two Machias Elementary School students were honored for a “save” by the Risk Watch program. Third-grader Grayson Pope and fourth-grader Khoa Nguyen were honored by Lake Stevens Fire Marshal Robert Marshall with certificates and logo wrist watches for reporting a gun they found on their playground in September.

Problem solvers: Snohomish students recently returned from the Future Problem Solvers state tournament in Warm Beach. The international competition will be held June 1-4 in Fort Collins, Colo. The following Snohomish students placed in the top third at state: Seattle Hill Elementary School: First place in junior division, qualified for internationals. Team members were Tori Davenport, Cara Prange, Alison Gertler and India Smith. Emerson Elementary School: Drake Remlinger placed first in individuals, junior division, qualified for internationals. Dutch Hill Elementary School: Second place in junior division. Team members were Lauren Johnson, McGill Chisholm, Nathan Proffit and Shelby Mills. Valley View Middle School: Allie Ingalls placed first in individuals and qualified for internationals.

Kudos: Archbishop Murphy High School students raised $6,400 for Catholic Relief Services as part of their annual Operation Rice Bowl fundraiser leading up to Easter.

Fritsch honors: Archbishop Murphy High School student Ben Fritsch was selected to receive the Mayor’s Youth Achievement Award. Fritsch also has been offered admission to the University of Notre Dame, a first in his school’s history.

Bee-autiful: David Poortinga, an eighth-grader at Everett Christian School, finished seventh out of 100 students in the 2006 Washington National Geographic Bee.

Great gymnast: Anna Epps, a student at Archbishop Murphy High School, recently competed in Boise, Idaho, at the Junior Olympic Regional Championships, which includes all the gymnasts who qualify to compete in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii. Anna finished sixth in the all-around and second on the balance beam. Anna qualified for the regional team and will be competing at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., at the end of April. She will compete against the best level 10 gymnasts in the nation.

PUD award winners: The Snohomish County PUD recognized 16 local students in its 2006 essay and art competitions, which tested students’ understanding of water and electricity issues.
