Sandison honor: Shayne Sandison, Everett, is the ITT Technical Institute Computer Networking Systems Graduate Student of the Quarter.

Citadel honor: Angela Ellenwood, Snohomish, a junior at The Citadel in South Carolina, was appointed the position of Battalion Religious Officer and has earned the rank of Captain with the corps. She made the dean’s list for the first semester of this school year.

Excellent project: J.K. Park, Mill Creek, helped write a project that won an award for excellence in research at an Eastern Psychological Association meeting in Boston. Park attends Grove City College in Grove City, Pa.

Scholarship honor: Christina Hilgendorf, Mill Creek, was awarded the Northeastern University Presidential Scholarship at the Boston university’s eighth annual awards presentation earlier this month. She is a member of the Class of 2007 and is majoring in philosophy and with minors in business administration and political science. Hilgendorf is a graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School.

Artists on display: Six students from Shoreline Christian High School had artwork chosen for the Puget Sound Educational Service District’s 2005 Regional High School Art Show, including: Rachel Werkhoven of Monroe, oil pastels; Kyle Paulsen of Marysville, mixed media; Laurel Hodges of Brier, charcoal; and Annamarie de Guzman of Shoreline, oil pastels. Senior David Fertello of Brier received an Outstanding Achievement Medium Award for his etching, “Jungle Nautilus.” There were 251 entries submitted from 28 school districts in King and Pierce counties plus Bainbridge Island. Write stuff: Deborah Womelsduff of Lynnwood, an English teacher and drama coach at Shoreline Christian School, recently published an article entitled “The Paradox of Structure and Freedom: An Experiment in Writing Poetry” in the March 2005 issue of the English Journal, a journal of ideas for language arts teachers. Shoreline Christian High School seniors Steve Vander Zee and Jonathon Monillas also had their poems published in the journal as examples of Dinka-style poems. Womelsduff is part of the Puget Sound Writing Project and a founding member of Broadswords, a writing group of language arts educators.

All good: Cascadia Community College student Whitney Mueller was recognized at the annual All-Washington Academic Team Award ceremony on March 24 at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia. Gov. Christine Gregoire spoke and presented medallions to the students commemorating their selection. Mueller, 20, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92. She will graduate in June with an associate’s degree in integrated studies and plans to transfer to a university to earn a degree in communication and advertising. Each of the state’s community and technical colleges nominated one student for the honor, which came with $750 in scholarships.

Academic distinction: Kristine Nowak and Lacey Wolfe, both of Snohomish, were awarded Academic Distinction for the fall 2004 semester at Whitman College. Nowak is a junior English major. Wolfe is a sophomore Spanish language and literature major.
