Schools applause

League scholarships: The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County announced the 2004 winners of its $1,000 scholarships for post-high school education. Recipients are:

Elspeth Catherine Williams, Lake Stevens High School, has been educating youths about the dangers of tobacco use. She has participated in stings, educational presentations, testified in Olympia and talked with policy-making groups, among other activities. She plans to study international relations and diplomacy at Columbia University or the University of Washington and is interested in working on international policy with an organization such as the United Nations.

Rheanne Elizabeth Wirkkala, Jackson High School, is passionate about preventing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and believes new ways to fuel vehicles can protect national treasures. She conducted an all-school voter registration day and worked for John Kerry’s presidential campaign. This fall she will attend Boston University, majoring in political science and international relations, to pursue a career with the State Department, possibly serving in the U.S. Embassy in France.

Judges and league members are: chairwoman Lois Drake, Ruth Nelson, Margery Kreiger, Barbara Yasui and Carolyn Scheldrup.

Glein award: Christopher Glein, grandson of Robert and Patricia Glein of Marysville, was named the 2004 Outstanding Undergraduate in Analytical Chemistry by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington. He is also one of three recipients to receive the 2004 P.C. Cross Award in physical chemistry.

Peace Action winners: Winners of Peace Action of Snohomish County 2004 Linda Jewell Memorial Essay Contest are:

Brier Terrace Middle School: Calvin Tran, first, eighth grade; Olga Mosiychuk, second, eighth grade.

College Place Middle School: Rafaela Lopez-Santillana, first, eighth grade; Caroline Grotheer, Ruth Reeber and Brook Watson, all second, seventh grade.

Maplewood K-8: Anna Lofstrand, first, eighth grade; Reilly Duvall and Emily Whitson, seventh grade, and Alicia Hendrix, eighth grade, all second.

Meadowdale Middle School: Samantha Hartford, first, seventh grade; Kyle Marty, second, seventh grade.

First-place winners received $50 and a certificate. Second-place winners received $25 and a certificate.

McCall honor: Shannon McCall, Mukilteo, a student at Kamiak High School, was selected for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars.

Dean’s List: Students on college and university deans’ lists include:

Jennifer Kaminske, Lake Stevens, Texas Christian University.

Bradley Baumgartner, Stanwood; Richard Ford, Arlington; Natalie Hardin and Tyson Zevenbergen, Everett; Lisa Migliacio, Snohomish; Adam Zimmerman, Marysville; Gonzaga University.

Shannon Rasmussen, Everett and Megan Kaas, Woodinville, Eastern Oregon University.

President’s List: Students on college and university presidents’ lists include:

Sinead Harris-Jones, Everett, Gonzaga University.

Abbey Weith, Edmonds, is on the honors list at Agnes Scott College, Georgia.

College graduates: Students who recently earned degrees at colleges and universities include:

Emily Meier, Arlington, Ohio Wesleyan University.
