Ruling mixed for local districts suing state
A Thurston County Superior Court judge recently upheld the state’s system for funding special education but threw out a lid on the number of students that can draw state dollars.
It was a mixed decision for the Everett and Northshore school districts. They were among a dozen districts that sued the state, claiming it was shortchanging schools by more than $100 million per year in special education funding.
Everett Superintendent Carol Whitehead said the district’s quest for more dollars now turns to lawmakers, who are debating school funding issues following a separate lawsuit over basic education funding.
“It is our hope that legislators will do the right thing during this legislative session and take on our state’s school funding crisis,” she said. “It’s a priority that should not be ignored.”
