Snohomish chess team is league champion

The Snohomish High School chess team beat Arlington High School in the WESCO League championship match last week.

Besides qualifying for the state chess tournament this weekend, the Snohomish victory also ended a six-year winning streak by Meadowdale High School.

Snohomish now has seven league championships since 1973, tied with Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace.

Members of the winning team: Nick Nyberg, Eric Dierling, Ben Brunette, Jesse Malean, Ryan Cowper, Michael McBride, Omer Boudrissa, Leif Nordquist, Charlie Schultz, Robert Lathrop and Doug Lathrop.

Auction helps students pay for spring trip

A silent auction and dessert sale at 6 p.m. Friday will help raise money to send Lake Stevens home-school students to an oceanography program in San Diego this spring.

The 40 students in kindergarten to grade 7 in the Lake Stevens district’s HomeLink program need $15,000 for the trip.

Auction items include dinners and driveway acid washes. Desserts cost $2. There also will be a science fair.

Voyager Middle School sets parent night

Voyager Middle School has set a sixth-grade parent night for 6:30-8 p.m. March 1 at the school.

Food from Taco Bell will be served before the presentation that will include tips on testing and questions and answers about middle school.

There will be free child care, door prizes and community booths.

Edmonds school calendar set through 2007-08

The Edmonds School District has announced key dates on its calendars for the next three years after negotiating with its 13 employee groups and surveying parents and staff.

School starting dates will be Sept. 6 this fall, Sept. 5 in 2006 and Sept. 4 in 2007.

The last days of school will be June 21 in 2006, June 20 in 2007 and June 17 in 2008.

Artwork created by Everett middle school students remains on display through March 3 at the school district’s administration building, 4730 Colby Ave.

Public viewing is weekdays 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Northshore schools raise $73,000 in tsunami aid

Northshore schools together have raised more than $73,000 to aid victims of the December earthquake and tsunami in South Asia. The amount does not include supplies and clothing that also were collected.

Efforts included bake sales, rummage sales, selling of paper hearts, coin drives, class competitions and collections at sports games. In many instances, parent groups provided matching funds.
