SEATTLE — Seattle City Light has hired two companies to test all 20,000 metal streetlight poles in the city to see if they have faulty wiring.
The Seattle Times reports that Davey Resources Group of Ohio and Power Resources Corp. of New Jersey were hired after several poles were found to be emitting “contact voltage,” which could pose a safety hazard.
The city-owned utility decided to inspect all the metal poles and 10,000 ground cover plates after a dog was killed Thanksgiving Day after stepping on an energized ground plate. Since then, City Light crews have found 10 faulty streetlights. The utility hopes to have all the testing done by March.
