50 years ago (1958)
Everett High School winter sports athletes were honored. Bob Gaines, basketball guard, won the inspirational award while Ray Sievers was honored with the scholarship award. Eddie LaMar, state champion swim team captain, won the inspirational award. Carl Sperber won the inspirational award from his fellow wrestlers.
Under the watchful eye of Pat Ness of Lake Stevens Chapter, Future Homemakers of America, 11-year-old Gary Perry located eggs in a hunt the FHA girls staged for Parkland Lutheran Home this week. Margie Whitehead was the girls’ adviser.
25 years ago (1983)
Gov. John Spellman signed House Bill 1038 into law returning Everett to the 2nd Congressional District where it was the district’s largest city. Peggy Doph’s name would be enshrined in state law books with the Doph vs. Munro redistricting case. Dwayne Lane could hardly wait to collect on his $100 bet with Edmonds Rep. Gary Nelson.
More than 14 million pounds of hake, a record haul, had been unloaded at Everett docks this year. About two million pounds of the fish were taken from waters between Stanwood and Hat Island this past week.
