50 years ago (1957)
Fred Baker, 96, 1606 Rockefeller Ave., died this afternoon. Baker founded the Ferry-Baker Lumber Co. here in 1901 and later expanded his operation through Washington and Oregon. In 1913 he started the Fred K. Baker Lumber Co., the predecessor to the present William Hulbert Mill Co.
Five members of the seven-man Snohomish reserve police force were officially sworn in by city attorney F.C. Knapp. The officers were Capt. Doug Engelbretson, Bob Johnson, Jim Clarke, Harley Fischer and Rosco Kanatacel. The other two men were Walt Krieger and Steward Dennis.
25 years ago (1982)
There were New York Life agents in the area – all good people to know. At the Everett general office in the Wall Street Building were general manager Gerald Hyde, John Smevang, Dennis Graves, Ron Rich, Bruce Timm, Mike Bjorlo, Dean Hammond and Joe Bowlby.
It came as no surprise to those who attended the Washington State International Air Fair at Paine Field over the weekend that it had probably attracted the largest two-day crowd ever. Mike Echelbarger, assistant show chair of the sponsoring Lynnwood Rotary estimated the crowd at 65,000.
