Randy Vekich, 6-foot 4-inch Everett Seagull basketball pivotman, was named to the Northwest League all-star five. Also, the 200-pound football quarterback was ranked in the top 10 of Northwest team scoring all season.
Nine lettermen were among the 21 Arlington High School baseball candidates who answered coach Ernie Ludwick’s call that week. They were Don Bibbons, Wes Evans, Frank Russell, Darryl Jensen, Stan Nelson, Tom Santeford, Rod Falor, Bob Reed and Glen Lawty. Others with promise were Don Baker, Ron Baker, Virgil Frey, Gordon Santeford, Denny Duskin, Curtis Patch, A. Clark, Skip Sesby, Al Tryon, Barry Rankin, Rob Riese, Bob Dutson and Jim Dennis.
Zeke Wells (of Zeke’s Drive-In east of Gold Bar) was enjoying springtime traffic on the Stevens Pass Highway, but he hoped future highway-closing avalanches on U.S. 2 didn’t fall on any more major holidays, such as Washington’s birthday weekend in February.
