50 years ago (1964)
Tom Gobin, for three years deputy marshal at Stanwood, was appointed chief of police for Arlington. The appointment was made by Mayor Jim Cann, with the approval of the City Council last night.
Ten Scouts from Troop 48 Darrington turned out recently for an all-day work party at the county park at Squire Creek. They were Steven Ryals, Stan Williams, Roddy Hayter, Kenny Larsen, Eugene Karger, Ira Dyer, Robert Hall, Dennis Dearinger, Eddy Bryson and Tommy Brown. Glen Ryans was their Scoutmaster.
25 years ago (1989)
Longshoreman Don Hopkins announced that he would try to win a six-year term on the Everett Port Commission. Hopkins said he felt the people deserved a commissioner who was a listening leader and took time to research issues before taking critical positions.
Karen Carpenter’s third graders at Whittier Elementary and Everett Parks Ranger Bill Pace were among those who welcomed the Soviet trawler Kargat into port. “Howdy Everett” was painted on the fishing vessel. The 83 men and women on the ship hoped to take in an Everett Giants baseball game and eat at McDonalds.
