50 years ago (1963)

“Stamped for Civic Improvement” read the caption of a drawing of the new post office slated for construction on the 3100 block of Hoyt Avenue The new building would be much larger than the current building at Colby Avenue and Wall Street. It would also bring the destruction of venerable Jefferson School, now serving as school district headquarters.

Back to work after summer vacation were members of the Lowell Community Development Club. Mike Ransopher and B.W. Brown were part of a work party painting the interior of the old fire station.

25 years ago (1988)

Despite the recent light rain, a burn ban remained in effect in Everett. The Everett Fire Department ordered an outdoor burn ban because of dry condition and heavy smoke in the air from forest fires elsewhere in the state. Everett Fire Marshall Sam Preston said the ban remain in effect at least through the weekend.

The ranger station at Darrington would be closed Sundays beginning this weekend, the U.S. Forest Service announced. Winter hours would be 6:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays.
