50 years ago (1964)
Jan Wiggum and Rocky Shore were crowned king and queen of the annual Valentine party at Olympic View Junior High School Friday afternoon. Selection of the royalty was one of the highlights of the annual event.
Complete remodeling of the S.H. Kress store at 2822 Colby Ave. was under way now. The entire store was being redone and the basement, previously serving as a storage area, would become additional retail space. Henry Matthews, local Kress manager, said the store would remain open during the renovation which was expected to take six to nine weeks.
25 years ago (1989)
Anglers crowded 14th Street Dock on the Everett waterfront on a crisp but hazily sunny morning to jig for herring and smelt. They had buckets of the silvery little fish that showed up regularly in the winter months, often to spawn, and attract jiggers from La Conner to Tacoma.
Traffic engineers were asking drivers to turn on their headlights while traveling on Marine Drive on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. The “headlights zone” extended from the I-5 interchange in Marysville to Stanwood. Lloyd Neel, a county traffic engineer, said the aim was to reduce accidents.
