50 years ago (1963)
Everett was one of 554 cities designated as “sectional centers,” focal points in the U.S. Post Office’s ZIP Code addressing system to be launched July 1. Everett was chosen as a center because it served as a main focal point of highway and rail transportation.
Margaret Hillyard, North Junior art teacher and president of the Art League of Everett, was shown with the charming “Portrait of Marion,” which she painted of her daughter. Mrs. Hillyard’s paintings were on display at Cuthbertson’s until June 15.
25 years ago (1988)
Greg Norgaard could’ve been mistaken for a Maypole yesterday by his Monroe Cooperative Preschool class. To celebrate the first day of the month, his students annually parade streamers around the pole. Norgaard said it didn’t usually rain the first day of the month, but this rainy day was the second.
New school superintendent William Edwards in Darrington already had given himself two assignments: get the September bond issue approved and establish next year’s budget. Board President Shirley Lewis said Edwards was the unanimous choice of the board, administrators, staff and citizens.
