50 years ago (1963)

Mrs. E.J. Schott, Snohomish resident for 65 years, celebrated her 103rd birthday with family and friends yesterday. When asked her secret of longevity, the spry woman said it was happiness. She said she was always happy and didn’t know how to get mad. Schott also washed and ironed her clothes.

Tony DeRooy and Elliot Munroe of Great Northern Railway packed away the last few pots of geraniums yesterday at the company’s greenhouse in Monroe. Effective today, the greenhouse that had for 37 years provided fresh flowers for the hundreds of dining cars and plants for the more than 250 station parks, was closed.

25 years ago (1988)

Judge Steve Clough of District Court in Monroe had completed a course on “Special Court High Volume” at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada-Reno. The course dealt with rising numbers of cases and management techniques.

Chantel Reluyea, eighth-grader at Lake Stevens Middle School, won first place in a cultural fair held at the school in which students formed displays representing their family’s cultural background. Her display, which went on to the state competition, featured her family’s gold-mining history.
