Some uses for craft-distilled liquors

Vodka

Cosmopolitan: Vodka, Triple Sec, Rose’s lime juice and cranberry juice, shaken with ice and served in a martini glass.

Other drinks: A Lemon Drop is vodka mixed with lemon juice and sugar, chilled and poured into a martini glass; a Salty Dog is vodka and grapefruit juice with a salted rim.

Rum

Mojito: Lime juice, sugar and mint muddled in a tall glass with crushed ice and rum, topped off with club soda; garnish with a slice of lime and some mint leaves.

Other drinks: A pina colada is light rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, blended or shaken; a daiquiri is light rum mixed with lime juice and sugar, shaken with crushed ice then strained into a glass.

Whiskey

Manhattan: Whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters, chilled and garnished with a cherry. Varations calls for dry vermouth or a mix of vermouths, and a lemon twist as garnish.

Other drinks: A highball is whiskey and ginger ale or soda, served over ice in a highball glass; an Old Fashioned — possibly the first cocktail — is whiskey, bitters and simple syrup, chilled and poured over ice and garnished with a twist.

Brandy

Sidecar: A cocktail of brandy, usually Cognac, with orange liquer such as Triple Sec or Cointreau and lemon or lime juice served in a sugared glass with a twist of lemon.

Other drinks: A Brandy Alexander is a sweet drink of brandy, creme de cacao and cream, chilled and garnished with a grating of fresh nutmeg; Between the Sheets is brandy and light rum shaken over ice with orange liqueur and lemon juice, served with a twist of lemon.

Gin

Martini: The classic drink, five or six parts gin to one part dry vermouth, shaken or stirred with ice and garnished with an olive.

Other drinks: Gin and tonic, served over ice with a wedge of lime; a gin fizz is gin, lemon juice and simple syrup topped off with club soda; a Tom Collins is essentially a gin fizz over ice, garnished with a maraschino cherry and a lemon slice.
